Local communities in the UK utilizing “connected places” projects may be at risk of cyber-attacks, according to recent reports. While new technologies offer opportunities for economic growth and improved public services, they also bring risks that need to be addressed and managed at both local and national levels. The government’s National Cyber Strategy aims to establish a framework for protecting and promoting the UK’s interests in cyberspace, with objectives including increasing the strength of the British cyber ecosystem and decreasing cybersecurity risks. To help local authorities protect cybersecurity as they develop connected places, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology has released an alpha Secure Connected Places Playbook designed to be accessible to those without a tech background. The playbook includes guidance on effective security governance, supply chain management lifecycle, and threat analysis. Local authorities are invited to participate in the project’s next phase, beta testing the playbook with dedicated cybersecurity support.
