Governor Kathy Hochul Unveils New York’s First-Ever Statewide Cybersecurity Strategy
Governor Kathy Hochul has recently introduced New York’s inaugural statewide cybersecurity strategy, accompanied by a $600 million commitment. This strategy has emerged as a top priority for the State of the State, aiming to bolster New York’s resilience against modern cyber threats.
Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of an interconnected defense that utilizes all available resources. She stated, “This strategy sets forth a nation-leading blueprint to ensure New York State stands ready and resilient in the face of cyber threats.”
The initiative aims to safeguard critical infrastructure, data, networks, and technology systems from malicious attacks. By bringing together public and private stakeholders, including local governments, the strategy seeks to create a unified front against cyber adversaries.
The primary pillars of the strategy – unification, resilience, and preparedness – have been designed to not only deter cyber-attacks but also effectively neutralize potential threats.
As part of the commitment, $90 million will be allocated to centralize cybersecurity efforts, with $30 million specifically designated for strengthening local governments’ cybersecurity through shared services. An additional $500 million will be invested in healthcare information technology cybersecurity infrastructure, while $7.4 million will expand the cyber units of the New York State Police.
Furthermore, Governor Hochul has signed legislation aimed at boosting New York’s technology talent pool. This legislation provides necessary funding for employers to acquire and retain cybersecurity professionals.
The comprehensive vision put forth by Governor Hochul has already garnered widespread support, including from acting national cyber director Kemba Walden. Walden likened New York’s strategy to the core principles of the national cybersecurity strategy.
“The President’s National Cybersecurity Strategy articulates an affirmative vision for a defensible, resilient, and values-aligned digital ecosystem that benefits all Americans and enables our grandest national ambitions,” said Walden.
“The New York strategy similarly articulates a fundamentally affirmative vision for cyberspace, advancing policy in areas such as public-private operational collaboration, regulation of critical infrastructure, cyber education and workforce development, and IT modernization.”
