Socura, a UK-based managed detection and response services business, has made the move from London to Cardiff in order to take advantage of the thriving security industry in Wales. Since the pandemic, there has been a significant increase in security skills, startups, and government investment in the region, making Cardiff one of the fastest growing tech hubs in Europe.
The Cyber Innovation Hub, an initiative by the Welsh Government, has been instrumental in attracting world-class cyber security products, high-growth businesses, and technically-skilled talent to Cardiff. The city is also home to renowned universities like Cardiff and Swansea, which offer exceptional computer science and cybersecurity courses. Socura plans to heavily recruit in the region and will also utilize the office space for its sister company, Block Solutions, which already has several Welsh employees.
The Welsh Government’s focus on cybersecurity played a crucial role in Socura’s decision to relocate. With major cybercriminal gangs and ransomware groups increasingly targeting critical infrastructure providers and key industries in Wales such as finance, healthcare, defense, manufacturing, and education, Socura aims to leverage its extensive track record in securing these types of businesses. The company recognizes that Welsh businesses are now prioritizing cybersecurity more than ever.
Andy Kays, CEO of Socura, emphasized that the decision to move to Cardiff was based on merit rather than sentiment. He expressed his excitement about being at the heart of the Welsh cybersecurity boom and highlighted how remote working has allowed areas like Cardiff to emerge as prominent players in the UK cybersecurity sector. Jo Stevens, MP for Cardiff Central, echoed this sentiment, praising Cardiff as an excellent place to run a business and highlighting the city’s credentials as a tech hub.
Welsh Government Economy Minister Vaughan Gething warmly welcomed Socura to Wales, emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting businesses in creating new jobs in future industries. Gething highlighted Wales’ world-class expertise in the cybersecurity sector and expressed confidence that Socura’s presence in Cardiff would help break down barriers to markets, support local talent, and attract other key players to the region. He also emphasized the Welsh Government’s dedication to further supporting the growth and success of the cybersecurity industry.
Overall, Socura’s relocation to Cardiff is seen as a significant boost to the Welsh cybersecurity ecosystem, further solidifying the region’s position as a leading hub for the industry.
