InfoSec Labs Founder Michael Mora Reflects on Cybersecurity History and Its Importance
August 28, 2023 – In a recent interview, Michael Mora, the founder and CEO of InfoSec Labs, shared his insights on the evolution of cybersecurity and its relevance in today’s digital landscape.
Mora, who established InfoSec Labs in 1989, has been at the forefront of cybersecurity consulting for decades. According to him, security has always been a concern, but the introduction of technology brought about significant changes.
One of the pivotal moments in cybersecurity history, Mora noted, was the infamous Morris worm. This event shifted the mindset from trusting all entities within a network to the concept of zero trust, which is widely embraced today. The rise of email also introduced new attack vectors, such as the ILOVEYOU virus.
In today’s cybersecurity environment, traditional perimeter security measures have become obsolete due to hybrid cloud deployments and ubiquitous endpoints. Defining the perimeter has become increasingly complex, making it challenging for businesses to grasp.
Mora emphasized that effective communication with non-technical stakeholders, including board members, is crucial for CISOs. He highlighted the need for security leaders to learn the language of business and balance technical expertise with strategic thinking. This approach will guide organizations towards resilient and adaptable security postures.
During the interview, Mora also discussed various topics, including the unique nature of today’s attack surfaces and adversaries, significant milestones in security evolution, and practical implementation of lessons learned.
Prior to founding InfoSec Labs, Mora held prominent positions in the cybersecurity field. He served as the managing director of cyber risk at Kroll and was the senior vice president and global CISO of Korn Ferry, a global public company with a vast international presence. Additionally, Mora sits on the advisory board of several security firms.
