"Malta Takes a Stand for Cybersecurity: Unveiling the Agenda for Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2023"

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a global initiative that originated in the United States in 2004. The main goal of this campaign is to educate individuals and organizations about the importance of cybersecurity and online safety.

The National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre for Malta (NCC-MT), under the realm of MITA, is emphasizing the critical nature of online safety more than ever. It is crucial for everyone to remain vigilant against the ever-evolving and increasingly sophisticated cyber threats. The consequences of falling victim to a cyberattack can be severe, ranging from financial losses to psychological distress.

It is important to recognize that the impact of cyberattacks extends beyond the immediate victim. If these threats are not effectively mitigated, they can spread and affect other organizations and individuals. In extreme cases, cyberattacks have the potential to disrupt an entire nation, as seen in the massive cyber-attack on Estonia in 2007. This serves as a reminder of the cascading effects that can occur if cybersecurity measures are not upheld.

In today’s landscape, it is crucial for individuals and organizations to acknowledge the prevalence of artificial intelligence (AI) in cyberattacks. Malicious actors are increasingly using AI to orchestrate cyber intrusions, and succumbing to such attacks has become remarkably effortless in our interconnected world.

To promote cybersecurity awareness during October, NCC-MT has launched a mission called CYBER+ALT ‘Agħżel Li Tipproteġi’ to strengthen the digital defenses of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Malta. This innovative initiative aims to empower SMEs with the necessary tools and knowledge to enhance their cybersecurity measures. The ultimate goal is to instill confidence and resilience in these enterprises to navigate the ever-evolving cyber domain effectively.

The significance of this scheme goes beyond individual SMEs. By enhancing the cybersecurity posture of these organizations, it contributes to safeguarding the Maltese cyber realm, protecting the digital infrastructure, valuable assets, and the integrity of the entire Maltese economy. It also ensures the well-being and security of the island’s citizens, making the digital space a safe and reliable environment for all.

SMEs are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this scheme and actively implement cybersecurity countermeasures. By doing so, we collectively contribute to the preservation of a secure cyber environment.

For more information on the scheme, visit the NCC-MT website at www.ncc-mita.gov.mt. The scheme will remain open until December 29, 2023, or an earlier date depending on the budget. Grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to budget availability. Applications can only be submitted online through the dedicated NCC Funding Application Portal at www.nccfunding.gov.mt. For queries, contact the NCC-MT at [email protected] The NCC-MT is also collaborating with Servizzi Ewropej f’Malta (SEM) to handle queries related to the online application at [email protected].
