Boosting Cybersecurity in 2022: Five Essential New Year's Resolutions for Businesses

Cybersecurity Resolutions for Irish Businesses in 2024

As we kick off the new year, businesses in Ireland are prioritizing cybersecurity to protect sensitive information and ensure uninterrupted operations in the digital age.

To assist Irish companies in strengthening their cybersecurity processes, the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) has put forward five New Year’s resolutions that can enhance cyber resilience in 2024.

1) Commit to Regular Cybersecurity Health Checks: Just as individuals prioritize health check-ups, businesses should conduct routine cybersecurity audits to identify and address potential risks. This includes assessing network vulnerabilities, software updates, and providing employee training.

2) Embrace Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): By implementing MFA, organizations can significantly reduce the risk of unauthorized access. Requiring users to verify their identity through multiple means, such as passwords and mobile device confirmations, strengthens the digital perimeter.

3) Educate and Empower Employees: Investing in employee training programs that enhance their understanding of cyber threats and best practices is crucial. An educated workforce serves as a formidable defense against phishing attacks, social engineering, and other cyber threats.

4) Secure Cloud Environments: While benefiting from the advantages of cloud computing, businesses should prioritize robust security measures. Implementing encryption, access controls, and regular monitoring of cloud services ensures data integrity without compromising scalability and flexibility.

5) Establish an Incident Response Plan: Prepare for unexpected cybersecurity incidents by creating and regularly updating an incident response plan. A well-defined plan ensures a swift and organized response, minimizing potential damage. Regularly reviewing and testing the plan guarantees its effectiveness in the rapidly evolving threat landscape.

SECURITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

To further enhance cyber resilience, organizations should consider adopting an information security management system as another New Year’s resolution. Denis Ryan, responsible for global information security at NSAI and a certified Lead Auditor, emphasizes the importance of integrating information security into processes, information systems, and controls.

ISO/IEC 27001 is one of the world’s most recognized Information Security Management Systems, and NSAI is accredited by the Irish National Accreditation Board (INAB) to certify organizations to ISO/IEC 27001:2022.
