Minister of National Security Michael Weeks announced in the House of Assembly today [May 3] that he will be introducing the Cybersecurity Act 2024 and the Computer Misuse Act 2024. These pieces of legislation are crucial for enhancing Bermuda’s cyber posture.
Weeks emphasized the importance of these laws, citing the unprecedented cyberattack on the Bermuda Government in September 2023 as a driving force behind the need for stronger cybersecurity measures. The attack underscored the government’s commitment to aligning Bermuda’s cybersecurity policies with its goal of becoming a leading financial technology jurisdiction.
The Cybersecurity Act 2024 will establish a Cybersecurity Advisory Board, designate Critical National Information Infrastructures, and establish the Cybersecurity Unit as the National Cybersecurity Incident Response Team. Additionally, the Computer Misuse Act 2024 will replace the current legislation to meet the requirements of the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime.
Weeks highlighted the government’s dedication to keeping Bermuda safe from cyber threats and ensuring that its laws effectively address cybercrimes. The introduction of these new laws marks a significant step towards bolstering Bermuda’s cybersecurity framework and protecting critical assets in the digital age.
