"Expert warns of ongoing cybersecurity vulnerabilities in NHS systems"

Expert warns of ongoing cybersecurity vulnerabilities in NHS systemsIn a recent report by BBC News, cybersecurity expert Prof Ciaran Martin is calling for urgent updates to NHS computer systems to prevent future cyber-attacks. This comes after a major ransomware attack severely disrupted healthcare services in London.

Prof Martin, the former CEO of the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre, expressed his concern, stating, “Ransomware attacks on healthcare are a major global problem.” Despite NHS England’s efforts to increase cybersecurity resilience and investing £338m in the past seven years, Prof Martin believes more urgent action is needed.

A recent British Medical Association report highlighted the NHS’s outdated IT infrastructure, revealing that doctors waste 13.5 million hours annually due to these systems. The recent cyber-attack on 3 June targeted Synnovis, a pathology testing organisation, impacting services at several hospitals in London.

The Russian-based hacking group Qilin demanded a £40m ransom, leading to postponed appointments and major data security concerns. Prof Martin emphasized the importance of updating IT systems, identifying vulnerable points, and implementing basic security practices to prevent future attacks.

He warned, “In parts of the NHS estate, it’s quite clear that some of the IT is out of date.” Improving basic security measures could make it harder for attackers to gain access. Prof Martin concluded that the recent attack was one of the most serious in British history due to its disruption to healthcare services.
