Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced a new minister for home affairs and cybersecurity. Tony Burke will now take on this responsibility in addition to immigration and multicultural affairs, arts, and leader of the House.
This cabinet change comes two years after Clare O’Neil was appointed as the cybersecurity minister. During her tenure, Australia experienced several cyber attacks and data breaches, including major incidents at Optus, Medibank, Latitude, and MediSecure.
Albanese has also appointed Andrew Charlton as a special envoy for cyber security and digital resilience. In a recent press conference, the PM highlighted the importance of addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by technological advancements in society. He emphasized the need for strategic thinking in positioning Australia to navigate these changes effectively.
