"Rethinking Cyber Security: A Call for a New Strategy in the Face of Inevitable Breaches"

Rethinking Cyber Security: A Call for a New Strategy in the Face of Inevitable BreachesAt the TED Conference in Vancouver this year, the Radical Innovators foundation hosted a forum with over 60 of the world’s top CHROs, CIOs, and founders. The focus was on how cutting-edge technologies like AI and quantum computing can enhance our human experience, transforming how we work and live together.

Despite the positive outlook of this esteemed group, a session was also held to address the looming cybersecurity threats posed by these emerging technologies. Thought leader and CISO of T-Mobile, Jeff Simon, led a discussion with tech executives on the future of security in the face of escalating cyberattacks.

Research from Proofpoint revealed that 94% of cloud customers were targeted monthly in 2023, with 62% successfully compromised. The potential for these technologies to increase the success rate of cyberattacks is a cause for concern.

Following the session, radical innovators expressed the belief that successful hacks are inevitable due to the inability of current teams and tools to scale effectively against threats. Ajay Waghray, CIO of PG&E Corporation, emphasized the need for a shift in focus towards cyber resilience rather than solely preventing breaches.

To address this shift, CEO Bipul Sinha of Rubrik highlighted the importance of knowing where sensitive data resides and evolving security policies to prepare for future threats. Venture capital firm Lightspeed Venture Partners also recognizes the importance of cyber resilience in building a secure enterprise.

Waghray outlined four key elements of a cyber resilience posture: planning, practice, proactive detection, and partnerships. These elements provide a foundation for organizations to adopt a proactive approach to cybersecurity and build resilience against cyber threats.

Embracing cyber resilience as the way forward requires a shift in mindset and investment in technology. By prioritizing planning, practicing response protocols, implementing proactive detection measures, and fostering partnerships, organizations can better prepare for and mitigate cyberattacks.

Leaders like Rafi Khan, CISO of NJ TRANSIT, emphasize the importance of ongoing work to enhance data resilience and reduce risk in the face of evolving cyber threats. Adapting to the future of cybersecurity requires intellectual flexibility and a commitment to building a resilient and secure digital environment.
