Bugcrowd’s annual report, “Inside the Mind of a Hacker,” has revealed some surprising trends in the hacking community. This year, with over 1,300 hackers participating, the biggest surprise is the increasing use of AI as a tool, tactic, and threat.
According to Bugcrowd CEO Dave Gerry, celebrating hackers is at the core of what they do. The latest report shows that 81% of hackers believe the AI threat landscape is evolving too fast to be adequately secured. However, there has been a significant shift in mindset, with 71% now feeling that AI enhances the value of hacking.
One notable change is the top use case for generative platforms, which has shifted from task automation to data analysis. This shift highlights the importance of data analysis in hacking activities. Despite concerns about AI making hacking more accessible, ethical hackers play a crucial role in uncovering vulnerabilities before they can be exploited by criminal hackers.
While some hackers believe AI can outperform them or replicate human hacking creativity, the overall consensus is that AI is not evolving as rapidly as expected in the day-to-day operations of hackers.
Bugcrowd’s CEO emphasized that AI is a strong force within the hacking community, changing strategies for finding and reporting vulnerabilities. The report focuses on highlighting trends and unique directions in security research, aiming to benefit Bugcrowd customers and the cybersecurity community.
Even in hardware hacking, AI is playing a significant role, with AI algorithms able to perform complex analyses and uncover behavioral patterns that human hackers might miss. As technology continues to evolve, ethical hackers and cybersecurity professionals must stay vigilant to combat emerging threats.
