The Taoiseach has expressed his approval of the US President’s decision to exempt phones, computer chips, computers, and other devices from new tariffs.
President Donald Trump recently imposed a 14.5% tariff on products from China, causing concern for companies like Apple, who manufacture some of their products in China.
In a recent announcement, the US also granted exemptions for semiconductors, solar cells, flat panel TVs, memory cards, and USB drives.
The White House stated that the goal is to give companies time to relocate production back to the United States.
During a speech in Roscommon, Taoiseach Micheál Martin described the news as “good news” and emphasized the importance of continued engagement with the US administration and European Union partners.
The temporary suspension of targeted tariffs on other countries for 90 days has allowed for negotiations to take place in order to address issues between the US and the European Union.
Martin stressed the importance of negotiation in resolving these issues and highlighted the benefits of keeping consumer prices low on imported goods from China.
The move has been met with appreciation as it will help maintain affordable prices for consumers on imported items.
