Parents around the world have been using screen time as a way to keep their children occupied for a few minutes, whether it’s to enjoy a cup of coffee or simply use the bathroom in peace. However, one nanny is speaking out about the negative effects of excessive tablet use on a four-year-old girl she looks after.
In a post on Reddit, the nanny shared her disappointment and horror at witnessing the drastic change in the little girl’s behavior after she started using a tablet. Prior to the introduction of the device, the child had a decent attention span and enjoyed a variety of activities like crafts, walks, and board games. But now, all she wants to do is play on the iPad, becoming irritable and demanding when redirected to other activities.
The nanny expressed her sadness at seeing the child transform from an imaginative and kind kid to what she calls a “sticky iPad monster.” She has discussed her concerns with the parents but feels limited in her ability to address the issue since she only looks after the child for a few hours a week.
Dr. Samina Yousuf, a pediatrician for OSF HealthCare, warns about the potential physical and mental health issues associated with excessive screen time in children, including obesity, depression, behavioral issues, and anxiety. She also emphasizes the importance of developing patience and communication skills through real-world interactions.
It’s clear that excessive screen time can have negative effects on children’s well-being and development. Dr. Yousuf recommends specific guidelines for different age groups, such as zero screen time for children under two years old and no more than two hours per day for those aged five to 17.
As parents, it’s crucial to find a balance between technology and other activities that promote healthy growth and social interaction. Let’s prioritize our children’s well-being and ensure they have a variety of experiences beyond the screen.
