Google’s new verification system has been targeted by scammers in a new email scam. The tech giant introduced a blue verification checkmark in May to combat internet scams, but scammers have found a way to hijack the feature. Cybersecurity engineer Chris Plummer posted an image of a spoofed email claiming to be from UPS, which appeared to be legitimate thanks to the verification badge. Plummer submitted a bug report to Google’s security team, which initially closed the case before reopening it after taking a closer look. Google has now required senders to use the more robust DomainKeys Identified Mail authentication standard to qualify for Brand Indicators for Message Identification status.
