AI PCs are on the rise, accounting for 14% of all personal computers shipped in the second quarter, according to research firm Canalys. Apple is leading the way in this growing market, commanding about 60% of the AI PC market with its Mac portfolio incorporating M-series chips with a neural engine.
PC providers and chipmakers are banking on devices that can perform AI tasks directly on the system, bypassing the cloud, as the industry slowly emerges from a slump. These devices typically feature neural processing units dedicated to AI tasks.
Microsoft’s Windows saw a 127% sequential growth in AI PC shipments in the quarter, with the introduction of “Copilot+” AI PCs in May. Intel also increased deliveries of its AI PC chips, hoping to capitalize on the trend towards AI-capable devices.
The premium segment is also seeing growth, with shipments of Windows PCs priced over $800 increasing by 9% sequentially. Lenovo’s AI PC shipments grew by 228% sequentially, representing about 6% of its total Windows PC shipments in the June quarter.
Overall, AI PCs accounted for 8% of HP’s Windows shipments and just below 7% of Dell’s Windows shipments. Canalys’ principal analyst Ishan Dutt predicts that AI-capable PC shipments will continue to gain traction in the second half of 2024.
With added artificial intelligence capabilities reinvigorating demand, the future looks bright for AI PCs in the tech industry.
