New Delhi: The decision to ban the import of laptops, personal computers, and tablets by the Central Government has been a hot topic of conversation in the country recently.
Responding to a question in an interview with Dynamite News, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized that this ban is a crucial step for ensuring the country’s security.
Addressing consumer concerns, Minister Goyal assured that the prices of these items will not increase as a result of the ban. Additionally, the government will take measures to ensure there is no shortage in supply.
According to reports, 58 percent of these seven items, including laptops, personal computers, and tablets, are imported from China. Therefore, this ban is seen as a significant blow to China.
However, the government has decided to provide a transition period for companies to adapt to the new system after making import licenses mandatory for laptops, tablets, and personal computers.
Notably, during the financial year 2022-23, the import of these items amounted to $8.8 billion, with China accounting for $5.1 billion of that total.
