Christopher Paul O’Kane, a 50-year-old from Feeny, was back in court after refusing to have an electronic tag fitted. O’Kane is accused of possessing two mobile phones for the purposes of preparing terrorist acts and having information likely to be useful to terrorists. During a bail application at the High Court, it was revealed that O’Kane had a spreadsheet containing the names of every member of the police force on his phone. The data breach occurred in August when the police mistakenly released the names of over 10,000 staff and officers. O’Kane, described as highly efficient in technology, allegedly tried to wipe his digital footprint. Defense counsel argued that O’Kane became a suspect due to his links with Irish republicanism. Despite being granted High Court bail, O’Kane refused to comply with the conditions, including having an electronic tag fitted. The court heard that his refusal was due to the strong medication he takes for a psychotic condition. However, the judge refused bail and remanded O’Kane back into custody. The case has been adjourned to September 18th.
