Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Fortunate Break

Despite not stepping onto the field, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s international break has been hailed as a success by former England goalkeeper Rob Green.

The Liverpool full-back was forced to miss England’s recent matches due to an injury sustained in his club’s Premier League clash against Aston Villa.

However, England’s loss of their perfect record in Euro 2024 qualifying against Ukraine, which highlighted a lack of creativity, has led Green to believe that Alexander-Arnold could benefit in the future.

“At least Gareth Southgate tried something,” Green expressed on the Football Daily podcast. “He experimented with [Jude] Bellingham and [James] Maddison in midfield.

“It was a new approach that didn’t quite click, but that’s how it goes.

“The real winner from the game was Trent Alexander-Arnold.

“Playing in a midfield role with the quarterback, as we called him, and even Harry Kane dropping into that position to make plays.

“If he had been selected, he would have brought a different dimension to the midfield.

“Obviously, being in the squad would have been beneficial, but sometimes you can gain from being omitted or not playing.

“Last night, he would have observed the time and space available in that deep-lying midfield position and picked off those runners.”
