Why Parents Should Avoid Using Computer Tablets as They Can Negatively Impact Children

Parents know that sometimes, a tablet can be a lifesaver when it comes to keeping their children occupied for a few minutes. It’s a chance to enjoy a cup of coffee or even just use the bathroom without any interruptions. But one nanny is warning against the dangers of excessive screen time after witnessing a four-year-old girl she cares for completely change after using a tablet.

The nanny took to Reddit to share her disappointment and horror, explaining that before the tablet came into the picture, the little girl had a decent attention span and enjoyed a variety of activities like crafts, walks, and board games. However, ever since the tablet entered their lives, all she wants to do is play on it. The nanny expressed her sadness at seeing the child transform into what she calls a “sticky iPad monster.”

The issue of excessive screen time for children is a growing concern. Dr. Samina Yousuf, a pediatrician for OSF HealthCare, warns that studies have shown links between excessive screen time and various physical and mental health issues in children, such as obesity, depression, behavioral issues, and anxiety. It can also disrupt their sleep patterns and hinder their performance in school.

Dr. Yousuf recommends guidelines for screen time based on age: zero screen time for children under two years old, one hour per day co-viewing with a parent or sibling for children aged two to five, and generally no more than two hours per day (excluding homework) for children aged five to 17.

It’s important for parents to be mindful of their children’s screen time and encourage a balance with other activities. The nanny hopes that her story serves as a cautionary tale for parents who may be considering introducing tablets to their young children.
