Everton Fans’ Forum Express Concerns Over Refereeing Standards
Everton fans have taken a significant step in voicing their concerns about the standard of officiating in their matches and across the wider game. The Everton Fans’ Forum has written a letter to the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) and its head, Howard Webb, outlining their grievances.
The letter highlights seven specific incidents that have left Everton supporters frustrated. These range from Michael Keane’s disallowed goal against Fulham to Ibrahima Konate’s escape from a red card, as well as incidents involving Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s red card and Beto’s penalty claim against Crystal Palace.
In the letter, the Everton Fans’ Forum acknowledges the difficulty of refereeing high-profile matches in the Premier League and FA Cup. However, they emphasize the need for consistent and transparent decisions that meet the high standards expected by fans.
The concerns raised by Everton fans are not exclusive to their club, as supporters from other teams have expressed similar issues. The way matches are officiated is impacting the enjoyment and love for the game.
The letter specifically calls on Howard Webb and the PGMOL to release audio recordings of the incidents mentioned and provide an explanation of the decision-making process behind them. The Everton Fans’ Forum also insists that there have been similar incidents in other games where the referee’s decisions did not align with those made in Everton matches.
The fans highlight various instances where they believe incorrect decisions were made. These include Michael Keane’s disallowed goal against Fulham, which contrasts with a similar challenge on a goalkeeper that resulted in a goal for Newcastle United. They also mention Ibrahima Konate’s avoidance of a red card compared to Ashley Young’s dismissal for similar fouls in the same game against Liverpool.
Furthermore, the Everton Fans’ Forum points out instances where goals were overturned or penalties were awarded inconsistently. They cite examples such as Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s disallowed goal against Tottenham and the failure to award a penalty for a shirt pull foul on Amadou Onana in the same game. They also mention a penalty given for handball by Onana against Manchester City, despite a similar block by Cristian Romero in another match not resulting in a penalty.
The letter concludes by expressing the fans’ desire for consistency in decision-making, regardless of the teams involved. They call for clear trends in what is and isn’t penalized to ensure a level playing field for all Premier League clubs.
The Everton Fans’ Forum has requested a written response from Howard Webb and the PGMOL. However, they are open to a meeting with representatives from the PGMOL to discuss these concerns further if necessary.
The Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) has also been raising similar issues regularly, but tangible improvements have yet to be seen. Everton fans hope that their letter will prompt action and bring about positive changes in the officiating standards.
