Craig Wright Required to Provide Evidence of Bitcoin Invention in UK High CourtAn important trial for the future of Bitcoin (BTC) is set to begin on February 5th in the United Kingdom High Court. The trial will determine whether Australian computer scientist Craig Wright is the true identity behind the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto. The case has been brought forward by the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA), a non-profit organization aiming to reduce the influence of patents and litigations in the crypto industry.

Since 2016, Wright has claimed to be Satoshi without providing any evidence. Now, after eight years and several legal disputes, he must prove his claim in court. The outcome of the trial could have significant implications for the ongoing cases Wright is involved in. The COPA claim, which began in April 2021, seeks to establish that Wright is not Satoshi Nakamoto, as stated in court documents.

Wright has initiated legal disputes against companies and developers whom he believes have unlawfully used and modified his software under his claim to be Satoshi. However, the COPA claim holds particular significance due to its focus on the identity issue.

Prior to the trial, on January 24th, Wright extended a settlement offer to COPA and all parties involved in the case. His proposal aimed to resolve the COPA claim and three other related disputes. However, COPA rejected the offer, stating that it contained loopholes that would allow Wright to sue again in the future. Furthermore, accepting the settlement would require COPA to acknowledge Wright as Satoshi.

According to COPA and other experts, there are numerous forgeries among the evidence provided by Wright. The alleged alterations of file dates and impossible claims regarding files created before available software raise doubts about Wright’s credibility. J Nicholas Gross, a law and intellectual property expert, described Wright as “troubled” due to these inconsistencies.

In addition to addressing these allegations, Wright must present stronger evidence to support his claim of being Satoshi. The trial is expected to last at least four weeks, with the possibility of extending further. It remains to be seen whether Wright can substantiate his assertions.

Attempts were made to reach out to Wright for comment, but no response was received at the time of publication.
