A bizarre case of deepfake images has shocked three individuals in Florida, as they discovered nude photos of themselves circulating on the internet. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office revealed that the realistic forgeries were created from the victims’ original clothed photos posted on social media platforms.
The victims, whose identities remain undisclosed, came across the photos online on March 13. Detectives traced the images back to an 18-year-old man named Sammarth Gautam, who was apprehended by the Lakeland Police Department in Polk County on April 22. Gautam now faces 16 charges of promoting altered sexual depictions without consent.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister condemned the acts as “despicable” and emphasized the violation of the victims’ privacy. The exact method of creating and sharing these images has not been disclosed.
Deepfake technology, which can digitally remove clothing from photos, has been used to exploit individuals, including celebrities like Taylor Swift. This disturbing trend highlights the importance of safeguarding personal information online.
