Governor Kathy Hochul recently found herself in hot water after making a controversial statement at the Milken Institute Global Conference. Hochul claimed that ‘young Black kids growing up in the Bronx who don’t even know what the word “computer” is,’ sparking outrage and accusations of being out of touch.
After facing backlash, Hochul issued an apology, stating that she ‘misspoke’ and regretted her remarks. She clarified that her intention was to highlight the lack of access to technology in low-income communities, particularly in the Bronx.
Despite her attempts to explain, residents and lawmakers criticized the Governor for being ‘disconnected from reality’ and called for her resignation. Assemblywoman Karines Reyes expressed deep concern over the underlying perception of minority children in the borough, emphasizing their intelligence and capabilities.
Social media users also weighed in, with many condemning Hochul’s comments as racist and patronizing. While some defended her, others called for her to step down in disgrace.
Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie offered a more forgiving perspective, acknowledging the hurtful nature of Hochul’s words but expressing hope for collaboration to improve access to technology for all students in the Bronx.
