Cyber threats that could devastate your business

Cyber threats that could devastate your businessNorthern Ireland is fortifying its cyber security ecosystem in response to the growing threats posed by cyber criminals leveraging generative AI. Ciaran Martin, former chief executive of the National Cyber Security Centre, highlighted the increasing danger of organised ransomware criminals, particularly those based in Russia, targeting businesses of all sizes.

With London and Dublin facing significant risks due to their large data-driven corporations, Northern Ireland’s abundance of SMEs also presents an attractive target for cyber attacks. These small businesses, often lacking the financial resources and time to invest in robust cyber security measures, are vulnerable to tailored ransom demands from sophisticated criminals.

Ransomware attacks, which can either lock victims out of their networks or threaten to publish stolen data on the Dark Web, pose a significant threat to Northern Ireland’s high-tech and R&D industries, as well as its burgeoning start-up scene.

To combat these threats, Northern Ireland is actively building a strong cyber security hub. The Centre for Secure Information Technologies (CSIT) at Queen’s University has identified 124 companies contributing to the region’s cyber security ecosystem, with a goal of creating 5,000 jobs by 2030.

Leading the charge in cyber security is Rapid7, whose Belfast operation is at the forefront of innovative solutions. Dr. Stuart Millar, principal AI researcher at Rapid7, praised Northern Ireland’s top-class engineers and project managers for driving the region’s cyber security boom.

A recent partnership between Rapid7 and CSIT aims to address threats to cloud services using AI and machine learning techniques. This collaboration not only strengthens cyber defences but also prepares the next generation of students for careers in Northern Ireland’s growing cyber security sector.
