A Brazilian politician made headlines after a video surfaced of him slapping a computer screen during an argument with hospital staff over the alleged denial of care for his friend. Former congressman Raad Massouh was caught on camera confronting workers at Santa Helena Hospital in Asa Norte, demanding answers after they reportedly asked his friend, Antônio Melo, to make a hefty deposit for emergency treatment.
In the video, Massouh can be seen expressing his frustration at the situation, questioning the feasibility of making such a large payment in the middle of the night. He then proceeds to knock the screen off the counter before checking on Melo, who was resting in a hospital bed.
According to reports, Melo’s family contacted Massouh for help after he was allegedly denied care due to an outstanding bill. Melo’s daughter, Lia Nascimento, expressed concern over her father’s condition, noting his slurred speech and purple foot. After being turned away from one hospital, Melo was eventually admitted to the ICU at Santa Helena Hospital following the incident with Massouh and later transferred to a private medical facility.
Santa Helena Hospital issued a statement clarifying that they did not refuse care to Melo and that he received prompt treatment upon arrival. The hospital explained that the bill was only presented after the necessary care and treatment had been provided.
Massouh, a dual citizen of Syria and Brazil, previously served in the Federal District legislative assembly from 2010 to 2013 before being removed from office over allegations of embezzlement.
