The U.K. has slipped out of the top 50 supercomputers globally, according to the latest data from the Top500 project. The country’s current national supercomputer system, Archer2, is now ranked 62nd globally and is set to reach end-of-life in 2026. This decline follows the shelving of plans by the previous government to invest £800 million in a new exascale supercomputer at the University of Edinburgh. Professor Mark Parsons of the EPCC supercomputer center expressed concern, stating that it would be a “disaster” if the U.K. didn’t prioritize supercomputing investment, as it is crucial for the advancement of U.K. science and innovation.
