A Russian hacking software has reportedly been used to steal hundreds of Ministry of Defence computer log-ins in a significant security breach. The MoD is currently investigating the incident, which has resulted in emails and passwords of nearly 600 employees, including UK Armed personnel, civil servants, and defense contractors, being stolen and leaked on the dark web by cybercriminal groups since 2020. The stolen data includes email addresses and other log-in information necessary to access the MoD’s Defense Gateway portal, an online platform for British military personnel.
Although the compromised system does not contain classified information, it plays a crucial role in staff communication and provides access to human resources and health data. Most of the affected employees are believed to be based in the UK, but details of MoD staff in Iraq, Qatar, Cyprus, and mainland Europe have also been compromised, posing a significant security risk.
The incident was brought to light by the i newspaper, which reported that the majority of the data was stolen from staff using personal devices to access the online platform. There are concerns that hackers could potentially access sensitive information such as private email accounts, online banking, and social media profiles of MoD staff, putting them at risk of blackmail. A government spokesperson emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant against information theft and addressing vulnerabilities to protect critical services.
This breach comes amid warnings from MI6 chief Richard Moore about Russia’s “staggeringly reckless” sabotage campaign against Ukraine’s Western allies, including the UK. Moore highlighted the efforts of intelligence agencies to prevent escalation by Moscow’s covert spooks, who are retaliating against decisions allowing Ukraine to use western-supplied missiles against Russian targets. He described the Russian military intelligence wing, the GRU, as engaging in dangerous activities and rhetoric that are beyond irresponsible. Moore’s remarks were made during a gathering with French intelligence officials to mark the UK-France Entente Cordiale, a historic pact between the two nations.
