New Tesla vehicles experiencing self-driving computer malfunctionsTesla is facing issues with the self-driving computers in its latest cars, leading to a surge in complaints and overwhelming service centers, according to Electrek. The problem is linked to the latest HW4 iteration, internally referred to as AI4.1, with reports of short-circuiting due to potential low-voltage battery issues affecting rear-view camera calibration.

New Tesla owners have reported computer failures after driving only a short distance, impacting various features like safety systems, cameras, GPS, navigation, and range estimations. The problem seems to be widespread, affecting cars manufactured in recent months with the new computer.

Despite numerous complaints, Tesla has not yet issued a service bulletin for this issue. The company is advising service teams to downplay safety concerns to avoid causing alarm about vehicle drivability. This issue comes at a time when Tesla is striving to deliver a record number of vehicles by year-end to prevent a decline in annual deliveries for the first time in a decade.

It remains unclear if Tesla has reported the problem to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The faulty rear-view camera could potentially violate federal safety regulations, making it eligible for a recall. Tesla is currently considering computer replacements and software patches as temporary fixes, with service appointments being delayed into next year due to the high number of affected vehicles.
