Super Micro Computer (SMCI -5.46%) stock took a tumble in Monday’s trading, with shares down 5.3% as of 12:45 p.m. ET. The server specialist saw a dip of as much as 11% earlier in the day, while the S&P 500 index was down 0.2% and the Nasdaq Composite index was down 0.8%.
The drop in Supermicro stock coincided with news of the U.S. planning to impose new restrictions on artificial intelligence (AI) chips. These regulations aim to enhance America’s competitive edge in the tech sector by limiting the export of AI chips to countries like China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea.
White House officials revealed plans to expand restrictions on advanced AI chips and semiconductor manufacturing equipment sales to adversarial nations, citing national security interests. Supermicro, a key player in the AI server space and a major customer of Nvidia, could face challenges due to these restrictions.
Investors are eagerly awaiting Supermicro’s delayed 10-K report, set to be released before Feb. 25. The company’s stock performance could hinge on the report’s findings, especially in light of ongoing investigations into the export of Nvidia chips to China. Geopolitical tensions and regulatory risks may continue to impact Supermicro’s stock moving forward.
