Neuralink, Elon Musk’s brain-computer interface company, has announced that it has received FDA approval to launch its first in-human clinical study. This means that real humans could soon be getting a device from Neuralink implanted in their heads. Musk had previously claimed that the company was about six months away from its first human trial, and it seems that this promise is actually coming true on time. While the announcement of a future human trial isn’t a huge milestone, the results of the trial will be. It’s interesting to wonder who would sign up for such a thing and why. Will it be someone with an important medical reason or someone who wants to draw attention to themselves at Musk’s side? There’s even a chance that Musk himself might get the device implanted in his own head at some point in the future. However, Neuralink has been accused of abusing its monkey test subjects, which the company denies. The FDA rejected an early 2022 Neuralink application for human trials, citing “dozens of issues” that needed to be addressed. While Neuralink wouldn’t be the first to implant a brain-computer interface in a human, it’s still an exciting development. If you’re interested in being part of the Neuralink trial, recruitment isn’t open yet, but the company says it will announce more information soon.
