Bank of Ireland computer glitch enables customers to withdraw excess funds

Bank of Ireland customers had a surprising opportunity to withdraw large amounts of cash that wasn’t theirs during a recent systems meltdown. The incident, which also affected online and mobile app banking, allowed customers to make “above normal limits” withdrawals for several hours overnight. The bank quickly took to social media to apologize for the “technical issue” and assured customers that their accounts would be reconciled once normal service was restored. However, the bank made it clear that customers would have to pay back any funds they had withdrawn. Bank of Ireland denied any suggestion of a cyberattack, stating that it was simply an “outage.” The issue was resolved in the early morning hours, but the bank cautioned that payments to accounts may still appear throughout the day. The incident caused long lines at ATMs across the country, as seen in videos and photos posted online. Additionally, fintech provider Revolut is investigating reports of large funds transfers into some of its customers’ accounts from Bank of Ireland, followed by withdrawals from ATMs. This incident comes on the heels of a major data breach in Northern Ireland, further highlighting the importance of cybersecurity.
