A powerful new computer virus is causing chaos in e-mail systems worldwide. Known as Goner, experts are calling it one of the fastest-spreading viruses to date and are urging users to delete it immediately if they receive it. Alex Shipp, spokesperson for anti-virus service MessageLabs, warns that the virus is spreading rapidly and has already affected thousands of users in the UK. Goner is a mass-mailing virus that attempts to destroy anti-virus software on infected computers. The infected e-mail has the subject line “Hi” and the body text reads, “When I saw this screen saver, I immediately thought about you. I am in a hurry, I promise you will love it.” The attachment is labeled “gone.scr.” The virus was first detected in the US but is believed to have originated in Europe. The US, UK, and France are the most heavily impacted countries so far. Authorities have launched a criminal investigation to find the person responsible for creating the virus. Previous viruses like Love Bug, Code Red, and Nimda Worm have caused widespread problems for computer users worldwide.
