A nurse who attributed the Covid pandemic for her descent into pedophilia has been permanently removed from the nursing register. Rebecca Ruler, 33, claimed that the stress and isolation of managing a respiratory ward pushed her to collect indecent images of children and explicit content involving animals.

Despite her claims of being coerced by an online acquaintance, Ruler was found to have initiated the disturbing conversations and admitted to four child sex offense charges last year. Following a suspended sentence, she has now been struck off for life by a tribunal aiming to safeguard patients from her predatory behavior.

Ruler, formerly of Coppull, Lancashire, was caught accessing inappropriate content on a work computer at the Royal Bolton Hospital, leading to her downfall. The Nursing and Midwifery Council emphasized the severity of her actions, including downloading and sharing graphic images, as they made the decision to permanently remove her from the nursing profession.

While Ruler’s defense cited her struggles with depression exacerbated by the pandemic, the court highlighted that she willingly engaged in illicit activities without coercion. Despite her sentencing and rehabilitation requirements, the NMC panel deemed a striking-off order as the only appropriate response to protect patients and uphold professional standards.

The Royal Bolton Hospital has chosen not to comment on the matter.
