A nurse who attributed the Covid pandemic for her descent into pedophilia has been permanently removed from the nursing register. Rebecca Ruler, 33, claimed that the stress and isolation of managing a respiratory ward led her to collect indecent images of children and animals. Despite initially blaming coercion from an online acquaintance, Ruler admitted to four child sex offense charges last year.
Following a tribunal ruling, Ruler has been struck off for life to safeguard patients from her actions. The former ward manager was found to have accessed inappropriate content on a work computer at the Royal Bolton Hospital, where she was employed. Ruler’s criminal activities, including the creation and distribution of indecent images, were deemed severe enough to warrant her removal from the nursing profession.
During her court appearance, it was revealed that Ruler had downloaded and shared numerous explicit images over a year-long period. Despite her claims of seeking male attention and battling depression exacerbated by the pandemic, the court found no evidence of coercion in her actions. Ruler was handed a suspended sentence and ordered to complete rehabilitation activities and adhere to strict legal requirements.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council panel determined that Ruler’s offenses had irreparably damaged public trust in her as a healthcare professional. The decision to strike her off the register was made to uphold professional standards and protect patients. The Royal Bolton Hospital has chosen not to comment on the matter.
